Ideas for a healthy medicines market
1
Stop the race to the bottom
Imposed price reductions and unfair taxes lead to unhealthy price pressure that severely impacts generic medicines. This results in fewer generic medicines available on the market. The more suppliers there are, the smaller the risk of medicine shortages.
2
Stop the monopolies
Unhealthy price pressure caused by imposed price reductions, fines, and taxes disproportionately affects generic medicines. This results in fewer generic medicines on the market, and fewer suppliers inevitably lead to more shortages and... higher prices.
3
Encourage the prescription of generic medicines
Generic medicines create competition (i.e., a larger supply) and initiate a savings mechanism for the government and/or the patient. Quotas for prescribing by active ingredient, incentives for prescribing generic medicines, a more favorable reimbursement regime for these generic medicines... these are just a few of the measures the government can take to strengthen supply security.
4
Lower the threshold for prescribing by active ingredient
There is a simple measure the government can take to encourage a healthy market situation. For example, we propose prescription software where prescribing by active ingredient is the default option presented to the doctor. No more prescription software with an alphabetical ranking of brand-name medicines.
5
Value the pharmacist in their role
Encourage prescriptions by active ingredient to empower pharmacists in their role. Pharmacists are best positioned to make the right medication decisions for the specific patient. This results in less time wasted for doctors, pharmacists, and patients alike.
